At 4:37am the 4th of September Saturday Canterbury, New Zealand, I was in my bed. I was woken suddenly and looked around, everything was shaking and there were sounds of cupboards opening and closing loudly and things falling and breaking. There was a HUGE bang! My mum screamed and ran to my doorway. She called out my name so I ran to the doorway and stood there thinking if I would ever go on MiniMonos again.
My mum, my dad and I were standing under the door and after about a minute the shaking stopped! The lights in the street flickered then went off. My dad went to the garage and turned the car radio on then he got some torches and gave them to us. We walked to my bedroom first. "My... my TV! I thought. It was on the ground with wires everywhere -- that must of been what the bang was! We went to the lounge and the house shook again! It was an aftershock. There was paper everywhere, stuff on top of the TV was broken and most of our food came out the pantry all on the floor. Another shake! And for the days after, each shake, I’ve been under the door.
When I write this, it is the 8th of September. Canterbury is still being rattled with aftershocks, well over 5 magnitude. Trust me its not fun. The Civil Defence says aftershocks will go on for days, weeks or maybe 1 month! I am off school for over 1 week. I’m still scared. Houses are destroyed. The only good thing is that ninja and my house is not destroyed.
The quake was 7.1 on the Richter scale -- that's as big as the Haiti quake!
Thank you

When the earthquake started I was still asleep. After I woke I heard huge noises and Mum calling me as she came down the stairs. I shouted “Is that hail?” Mum said “No it’s an earthquake!” Just when I jumped out of bed mum came in the door. Mum said “Come on quickly! Come to the doorway!”
It was completely black, we couldn’t see anything. We went down the hall and there were all these things on the floor. We were at my Godfather’s house and he turned on the car radio which was really loud. Then we sat in the lounge next to the heater which was not on because we had no electricity. Then my Godfather gave me a torch.
Suddenly another aftershock happened and we rushed into the doorway again. It went BOOM and more stuff fell on the floor. Now I was really really scared. I wondered what it would be like in 3 years looking back on it when I’m 11. Mum was hugging me from behind, around my stomach but I asked her not to because my stomach was feeling weird. Suddenly I felt sick. Me and my mum went to the bathroom in the dark and I puked.
There are some things we laughed about. It was funny because the man on the radio was also playing kids stories in the middle of the earthquake. Later when the TV came on there was a woman who said “I’m still shaking…I don’t know if it is the earthquake or my NERVES!” and she smiled and her head bobbed right up and down again and her eyes rolled in a funny way.
When we went home we couldn’t find our cats. One of them came back after 1 day and the other one in 2 days. I was so happy to see them back that I patted them 1000 times! I’m still feeling scared about the aftershocks. Some of them I’m extra-scared about. I feel a lot safer with people near me like my Mum and Dad or my friends’ parents.
